Ionic chemistry - the wilderness

Now, in this diagram you can see that sodium has one extra electron and chlorine needs one more electron to complete its valence shell. Therefore, sodium transfers its one extra electron to chlorine and both of them now have full valence shell. This transfer of electrons creates a bond between them and which is ionic.
Remember 2 main things:-

Ions are atoms or molecules which are electrically charged. Cations are positively charged and anions carry a negative charge. Ions form when atoms gain or lose electrons. Since electrons are negatively charged, an atom that loses one or more electrons will become positively charged; an atom that gains one or more electrons becomes negatively charged.

Ionic bonds form when the charges between the metal cation and non-metal anion are equal and opposite. This means that two #Cl^(−1)# anions will balance with one #Ca^(+2)# cation.
